A COMMUNITY is set to benefit from a new pounds 2.7m health centre in its village.
Durham County Council has given the go-ahead to plans that will transform a former infant school in Pelton, near Chester-le-Street, into a major new health centre, GP surgery, pharmacy and library.
It is hoped the Lavender Centre on Ouston Lane will breathe new life into the village.
Plans for the centre came about after Pelton Surgery, NHS County Durham, Durham County Council and specialist developer Prime, teamed up.
The pounds 2.7m building will house a huge range of services including health visitors, midwifery services, district nursing, physiotherapy, counselling, phlebotomy, podiatry and chronic disease management.
There will be specialist treatment and nursing rooms to provide additional services not already offered in the area.
And the development will also enable GPs to reintroduce services such as counselling appointments, link-worker appointments and carers’ groups.
The building will also provide space for a new village library.
Dr Tyson and partners will be based in the new Pelton Surgery and Dr Gollings and partners are to be based at the new Pelton Health Centre, both will be supported by an onsite pharmacy.
Work on the state-ofthe-art, two-storey building will begin on site in January 2010, and is due to be completed by April 2011.
